Credit Term
BNPL
Buy Now, Pay Later
Short-term instalment plans offered at checkout that split a purchase into a few payments, often interest-free. Convenient, but missed payments bring real charges — and BNPL is now being brought under formal regulation in Malaysia.
BNPL lets you spread a purchase over a handful of instalments, usually with no interest if you pay on time. Providers such as Atome, SPayLater and others make it easy to sign up at the point of sale. The catch is that it is still borrowing: miss a payment and you face late fees, and stacking several BNPL plans at once can quietly add up to more than you can comfortably repay.
Malaysia's Consumer Credit Act 2025 brings BNPL providers under a formal regulator for the first time, with rules on disclosure, affordability and fair collection. Over time, more BNPL activity is expected to be visible to the credit ecosystem, so treating BNPL casually — as if it were not a debt — is a mistake. Use it deliberately, keep track of every active plan, and pay on schedule.
